The Tipping Lab is using the common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, to study glial cell brain tumors, referred to as gliomas. We are specifically looking at mutations in the protein IDH, a metabolic enzyme, since it is altered in 70-80% of human gliomas. However the function of the mutant IDH protein is not fully understood. Through a series of molecular cloning techniques we have thus far created our mutant models that will allow us to better understand the metabolism of these aggressive tumors.
